Classical and Crossover Highlights
Duo Lamell–Matthys
Event Description
Antonine University (UA), in collaboration with the Embassy of Belgium in Lebanon, and through Chamber Music Season VIII, presents Classical and Crossover Highlights, a concert by Duo Lamell–Matthys, featuring American-Austrian clarinetist Josef Lamell and Belgian pianist Nathalie Matthys.
Founded in 2019 and based in Vienna, Duo Lamell–Matthys is internationally recognized for its innovative approach to the clarinet–piano repertoire. Blending classical masterpieces with crossover perspectives, the duo’s performances across Europe and the United States are marked by artistic dialogue, stylistic openness, and refined musical expression.
For this concert, the duo presents “On the Shoulders of Giants: Sounds of a Century,” a carefully curated program spanning major works of the 20th century, combining original repertoire and distinctive arrangements:
• C. Debussy: First Rhapsody
• I. Stravinsky: Italian Suite (arr. Lamell/Hsieh)
• M. Ravel: Prelude From The Tomb of Couperin
• E. Denisov: Variations on a Theme by Franz Schubert (arr. Lamell)
• J. Brahms: Clarinet Sonata No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 120
An evening that celebrates musical legacy, reinterpretation, and the expressive possibilities of chamber music through a dialogue between tradition and innovation.
