50% of children born with heart defects will need heart surgery at sometime in their life. Of the 50%, 35% need surgery in the first month of life or they die...
There are 5.5 million children on the waiting list for heart surgery in emerging and third world countries.
ONE PER CENT...
1% of the world's population is born with heart disease making it the most common birth defect. Many congenital heart defects can be repaired with one surgical intervention, some require staged repairs...
1% of children are born with heart malformation, equivalent to nearly 600 cases per year in Lebanon. If not treated, these diseases are the first cause of death before the age of one year, but if detected on time and an adequate treatment is given, the survival rate exceeds 95 percent.
It is every child's right to be born into a world where he or she can thrive, grow to be strong and make their parents proud.
It is not, however, every child's destiny... this is why the mission of HEARTBEAT is to bring the skills, technology and knowledge to cure and care for children with congenital heart disease. The association does this regardless of country of origin, race, religion or gender!
Throughout the past years, HEARTBEAT has organized several fund-raising concerts at BIEL, Faqra and the Casino du Liban. All concerts were major successes, attracting each year more than 5,000 people.
Till date Heartbeat treated more than 1,400 children with congenital heart disease. It is the result of an ingenious mix of medical instruments with musical ones, combining a medical corps, a musical band, and a group of volunteers from all walks of life.
