'Iron Man 3' writers considered 'Tony Stark as alcoholic' storyline

|

The Iron Man 3 writers wanted to include elements of 'Demon in a Bottle' in the storyline.

Director Shane Black and his writing partner Drew Pearce revealed that the story of Tony Stark being an alcoholic was considered but was rejected by Marvel Studios. They said that they were told not to include Tony Stark's struggle with drinking in the sequel.

"I think we were just told by the studio that we should probably paint Tony Stark as being kind of an industrialist and a crazy guy, or even a bad guy at some points, but the 'Demon in a Bottle' stuff of him being an alcoholic wouldn't really fly," Black told Comic Book Movie. "I don't blame that."

"It's also kind of a 'pick your battles' thing," added Pearce. "Alcoholism is a massive problem but it's also not the best villain for a movie."

They said that alcoholism was a subject that would have deserved taking up "the whole movie". The classic Iron Man storyline was formerly rumoured to be the basis of the third film in the franchise.

Black and Pearce echo previous comments by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

Iron Man 3 will debut in the UK on April 26 and in the US on May 3. Watch a trailer below:
