Angelina Jolie is as famous for being a mother-of-six as she is an actress, bombshell and wife of Brad Pitt.
However, she has admitted she never had the desire to have a baby.
While filming her upcoming movie First They Killed My Father in Cambodia, Angelina told the Associated Press: “It’s strange, I never wanted to have a baby. I never wanted to be pregnant. I never babysat. I never thought of myself as a mother.”
She now has three adopted children – Maddox, Pax and Zahara, and three biological children with Brad – daughter Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.
She said it was while playing with children at a Cambodian school on a trip as UN goodwill ambassador that things changed: “It was suddenly very clear to me that my son was in the country, somewhere.”
She adopted Maddox, now 14, in 2002 and a year later opened a foundation in his name in the Battambang province, which helps fund health care, education and conservation projects in rural Cambodia.
She is now working with her son on an adaptation of the Khmer Rouge memoir First They Killed My Father written by survivor Loung Ung that recounts the 1970s Cambodian genocide from a child’s perspective.
Maddox is helping behind the scenes on what Angelina describes as the “most important” film of her career.
She first visited Cambodia 16 years ago while filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
She said: “When I first came to Cambodia, it changed me. It changed my perspective. I realised there was so much about history that I had not been taught in school, and so much about life that I needed to understand, and I was very humbled by it.
“That trip triggered my realisation of how little I knew and the beginning of my search for that knowledge.”
She added that she sees her new project as a unique merger of her film work and family with humanitarian interests.
She expects to return to hold the film’s premiere in Cambodia at the end of the year, before its release on Netflix.
